When traveling in Haiti, remember ...

• Travel in a spirit of humility with genuine desire to learn more about the people of Haiti and the country itself.

• Be aware of the feelings of others, thus preventing what might be offensive on your part. This caution applies very much to photography and interfering in cultural activities.

Cultivate the habit of listening and observing rather than merely seeing and hearing.

• Realize that though Haitians have concepts and patterns that are different from your own, this does not make them inferior, only different.

• Consider the bargain you obtain was possible only because of the low wages paid to the maker.

• Do not make promises to people unless you are certain you can carry them through.

• Handouts often only reinforce paternalism and dependency. Be creative about exchanges and remember handouts undermine the more empowering self-help efforts.

Take time to reflect on your daily experience in order to deepen your understanding.
Remember to "travel in the spirit of humility..."
