FIDA and its working partner in Haiti, productive cooperatives Haiti (pcH) receive support from various government sponsoring agencies (CIDA, USAID, AIDB, Oxfam Quebec), private foundations, community organizations (Rotary Clubs), churches, businesses and countless individuals who value the democratic, economic self motivating principles of the cooperative model.

Wooden bowls created by Haitian artistsHaiti, with its label as the “poorest country in the western hemisphere” appeals to the many donors who connect peace and security with the ability to be economically productive and the ability to provide for one’s self and one’s family and to contribute to one’s community. The productive agricultural cooperative model as a means of fostering peace in the world by investing in economic opportunities for the poorest of the poor resonates particularly among a rural population from which we derive the majority of our support.

Over 80% of FIDA’s annual budget directly supports programming activities.

FIDA is a fully registered Canadian charitable organization
(BN 13365 2768 RR0001 or US EIN # 59-2821950) that was established by Jack and Anne Wall in 1980.  FIDA’s working arm in Haiti is productive cooperatives Haiti (pcH). In order to be eligible for a CIDA match all contributions must be made out to FIDA and designated Haiti Earthquake Relief and Reconstruction.

Corporate Program

Today, many businesses and corporations, as well as individuals, are seeking opportunities that align with their collective as well as personal philosophy, principles and work ethic. The benefits are four-fold:

  1. The mission statement of your company is reinforced when it resonates with the mission of your chosen charity.
  2. Customers and employees can respect and respond to a corporation whose statement and practice is in harmony with its vision of giving.
  3. Energy and enthusiasm within, and for, the corporation is strengthened through a consistent reinforcement of values.
  4. Knowledge and hands-on learning opportunities are expansive when a corporate community partners with a global community. For example, FIDA offers “not-so-comfortable-adventures-in-understanding-poverty” tours that take you behind the veil of Haiti to understand how to appropriately and respectfully make a difference in the world.

To discuss a partnership relationship with FIDA, please contact Betsy Wall, Executive Director at 519-886-9520.

Purchasing Haitian Art

Atizani items for saleFIDA mission is founded on the following principles:

  1. To undertake long-term sustainable development in developing countries with a focus on achieving identifiable results.
  2. To respond to the motivation of members of a community who wish to advance themselves economically by forming a cooperative
  3. To encourage the competence and to reinvest in the skills of the people to be able to address their needs with dignity and self-esteem.

Toward this end, FIDA purchases a variety of Haitian “atizani” (hand hewn art and practical ware) and offers them for sale in Canada through various events. If you would like to personally view the items available or to host an event, please contact Alexis Barkman at 519-886-9520.

From the corners of the little towns and villages in the poorest country in the western hemisphere there rings the sound of productivity and beauty ... “Mwen kapab. I am capable...”

I am poor because you tell me I am poor. I am poor because you see what I have not rather than what I have. I am poor because you think that if I have nothing that I can do nothing.  This is not true. What you hold in your hands is something that I have made. I have made it with what I have found around me. I have envisioned what it could become. I have crafted it with tools that I know. With this skill I am able to provide for my wife and children; to build them a solid home with a metal roof, to buy rice and beans, to purchase shoes and uniforms so they can attend school, to buy medicine when they are sick. This skill of mine gives me dignity. And when you hold it in your hands and whisper to yourself how beautiful it is, you will know something about me. You will know that I have pride and that I desire to be seen by you as a man of skill who desires respect and to be able to care for his family.”
